On Friday, three Palestinians lost their lives in the occupied West Bank. This unfortunate incident occurred just a day after the United Nations called for a “meaningful political process” to address the escalating violence in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
According to both Israeli and Palestinian officials, two Palestinian fighters were killed during a firefight that broke out when Israeli forces conducted a raid in the city of Nablus in the northern West Bank.
The Palestinian health ministry has reported that two people have been killed and three others injured due to the recent Israeli aggression in Nablus. The Israeli army stated that none of its forces were injured.
The army announced that they went into Nablus to apprehend two people who were wanted for a shooting incident. The shooting took place earlier this month and targeted Israeli police at a settlement in the West Bank. Thankfully, no one was injured in the incident.
According to a statement from the Palestinian health ministry, the two individuals who lost their lives have been identified as Khairi Shaheen, aged 34, and Hamza Maqbul, aged 32. The army stated that the individuals “were killed after engaging in a gunfire exchange with security forces.”
The army mentioned that they confiscated the weapons that the terrorists had used during the activity.
According to witnesses who spoke to AFP On Friday morning, Israeli troops went into Nablus and surrounded a house in the Old City, which is known as a stronghold for armed Palestinian groups. They then called on the individuals inside to surrender themselves.
The Abu Ali Mustapha Brigades, which is the armed branch of the leftist Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), stated that Shaheen and Maqbul are part of their group.
On Friday, another Palestinian named Abdel Jawad Hamdan Saleh, who was 24 years old, lost his life during a protest against settlements in the village of Umm Safa, located north of Ramallah. This information was reported by the Palestinian health ministry.
According to the ministry, he was severely injured by gunfire and unfortunately passed away later due to his injuries.
The village has experienced frequent clashes between its residents and Israeli settlers, making it a tense and volatile area.
According to the army, there was a violent riot that took place in the village. During this incident, the rioters threw rocks at Israeli forces, who then responded by using riot dispersal methods and live fire.
The army released a statement saying that they have identified a hit.
The escalating violence
The deaths on Friday occurred during a time when violence is increasing in the region.
A Palestinian attacker shot and killed an Israeli soldier near Nablus on Thursday. The Israeli army stated that they shot the assailant, but it is still uncertain what his condition is.
Hamas, the Palestinian Islamist movement, stated that they were responsible for the shooting incident. They referred to it as a “reaction” to an Israeli raid that had taken place in the Jenin refugee camp a few days prior.
On Monday, Israel initiated its biggest operation in the West Bank, an area it has been occupying since 1967.
During the raid on Jenin refugee camp, which lasted for over 48 hours and ended on Wednesday, twelve Palestinians and one Israeli soldier lost their lives.
After the offensive, several Arab countries have come forward to announce their aid for the Jenin camp. This aid is in response to the devastating impact of the offensive, which involved air strikes and the use of armoured bulldozers to destroy streets.
According to local media reports, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has announced his decision to donate $30 million towards the reconstruction of the Palestinian city of Jenin. In a statement, he expressed his intention to assist in rebuilding the city following what he described as a barbaric and criminal attack by Israel.
In 2020, the United Arab Emirates established diplomatic relations with Israel. On Wednesday, they announced that they will be giving $15 million to the United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA.
According to the official news agency WAM, the funds are meant to help recover the losses caused by the recent Israeli attacks, which have affected thousands of people.
The never-ending cycle of violence and bloodshed.
On Thursday, during a press conference in New York, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed his view that Israeli forces had used excessive force.
He mentioned that Israel has valid concerns about its security, but escalating the situation is not the solution. It only serves to strengthen radicalization and contributes to a vicious cycle of violence and bloodshed.
Guterres emphasized the importance of Israel restoring hope to the Palestinian people through a meaningful political process. This process should aim for a two-state solution and the end of the occupation. He believes that by doing so, Israel will also enhance its own security.
On Thursday, the Israeli army carried out a strike in southern Lebanon in response to an incident where an anti-tank missile, launched from Lebanon, exploded in the border area between Israel and Lebanon.
According to official sources from both sides, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict this year has resulted in the deaths of at least 193 Palestinians, 27 Israelis, one Ukrainian, and one Italian.
On the Palestinian side, there are both combatants and civilians involved. On the Israeli side, the majority are civilians, with three members of the Arab minority also involved.
