Caroline Wozniacki, a former top-ranked tennis player, revealed on Thursday her plans to make a comeback to professional tennis, marking her return after a three-year hiatus taken to focus on starting a family.
At the age of 32, Wozniacki retired in 2020, having achieved a remarkable record of 30 WTA titles, which included her memorable victory at the Australian Open in 2018, her only Grand Slam triumph.
On Twitter, Wozniacki expressed her gratitude for the past three years she spent away from the game, during which she had the opportunity to prioritize her family and embrace motherhood. She now cherishes her role as a mother to two wonderful children.
However, there are still objectives I wish to achieve. I desire to demonstrate to my children that one can chase their aspirations regardless of their age or position in life. As a family, we have collectively made the decision that it is the right time. I’m excited to return and play again!
Wozniacki is a parent to two children, Olivia and James, with her former NBA player partner David Lee. Olivia is two years old, while James was born in October.
In an article published in Vogue Magazine, she expressed her intention to participate in the US Open.
I am constantly drawn to the electrifying atmosphere of New York, and my performance in the city has consistently been exceptional over the years.
Additionally, David spent five seasons as a member of the New York Knicks, and we both have a strong affection for the team.
The Danish player mentioned her plan to “begin her matches in Montreal to regain her rhythm” between August 7-13, and then proceed to New York, where she reached the finals twice before.
Following that, I will allocate a few months to get ready for Australia, and then we will proceed accordingly. The Paris Olympics are certainly an aspiration as well.”
Let’s wait and see the outcome.
In 2010, Wozniacki achieved the top spot in the world rankings for the first time. However, she recently retired from professional tennis due to her ongoing struggle with rheumatoid arthritis, following her participation in the Australian Open in 2020.
Players such as Serena Williams, Kim Clijsters, and Victoria Azarenka have made their comeback to the circuit following the birth of their children.
She expressed her desire to demonstrate that it is possible to have both. It is possible to find joy in both your family life and the comforts of home while also excelling in your career.
Williams made it to four Grand Slam finals after her comeback, while Clijsters secured three victories, including two US Open titles and one Australian Open championship.
My close friend Williams, who has won an impressive 23 Grand Slam titles, has always been a great source of inspiration for me.
Wozniacki expressed her belief that Serena deserves more recognition for reaching numerous Grand Slam finals following the birth of Olympia.
Her retirement will forever be a mix of emotions, both for me and countless other players, as she has had a profound impact on women’s tennis.
She cleared the path for countless individuals – demonstrating that everything is achievable.
A few weeks back, Serena and I enjoyed a delightful dinner together. During our conversation, I shared my plan with her, and her response was simply, “Wow – that’s great to hear!” I’ll be there to support you every step of the journey, and if you ever require assistance, I’m available. She has consistently been by my side.
“Do I feel anxious?” she asked. I disagree. I am returning to something that brings me joy.
Is it possible for me to emerge victorious in the US Open? I believe that is the case. Is it possible for me to emerge victorious in the Australian Open? I believe that is the case. That is the reason I am undertaking this task. And I suppose we’ll find out what unfolds.”
